FIGHT COMICS: HEART!
MMA is making more and more of a splash in fight fiction (Suckerpunch by Jeremy Brown) and fight comics (the rebooted Joe Palooka), including this new title, Heart, from G4’s Blair Butler . . .
Heart is the brutal tale of young Oren Redmond on his rise and transformation from mediocre college dropout to amateur fighter. Moe than just being about fighting, Heart tells a relateable human story about seeking to change oneself by dedicating yourself to the pursuit of difficult goals.
Heart’s black and white art from Kevin Mellon is stripped down, but servicable, as he captures armbars, triangle chokes, and all the other aspects of a fight while showing every grimace to pass across a fighter’s face.
I’m going to need to see a couple more issues in this four part mini-series to see if it’s a winner or a tap-out. The premiere issue is on stands now with the remaining issues to come in early 2012.
HEART #2
The evolution of cage fighter Oren "Rooster" Redmond continues – but will a fist to the face stop his momentum before it starts? If you like dudes punching each other in the grill, this one’s for you!
HEART #3
M.M.A. fighter Oren "Rooster" Redmond steps into the cage for the biggest bout of his career in the shocking, penultimate chapter of this brawl-filled comic. If you bought the first two issues, this one should be a no-brainer.
HEART #4
It all comes down to this. The shocking outcome of a pivotal fight forces M.M.A. brawler Oren "Rooster" Redmond to reconsider his future inside – and outside – the cage. Don't miss the conclusion to this violent tale from artist Kevin Mellon (Lovestruck) and writer Blair Butler (G4's "Attack of the Show").
