Trooper Gladstone Farrell of Victorian Colonial Police Force was corrupt as they came.

Farrell had a fearsome reputation throughout the Central Victorian Goldfields. He was not in the least concerned at keeping the peace. As far as he was concerned, 'Gold Fever' was about money, and he did everything possible to get his share. However, this did not include hard labor, such as digging or panning for gold. His methods were much simpler. He would allow others to do the hard graft, and when they had found a few ounces he would swoop – always in the capacity of a custodian of the law. Most of the miners in the area didn't have licenses, so when Farrell came calling, they either had to pay a portion of their diggings or face a hefty fine. Either way, Farrell got their gold or their money.

When Farrell swooped on the Clancy brothers for mining without a license, they made an unusual proposition to keep from going to jail. Danny Clancy was a bare-knuckles fighter; but not an honest one. His next fight was fixed, and his opponent was set to fall in the sixth round. Farrell muscled in on the deal, intending to collect two ways – first taking his cut from the Clancy brothers, and secondly, cleaning up with his own side bet.

James Hopwood (pen name of David James Foster), author of King of the Outback, a hard punching story in the Fight Card series is back with another knuckle bruising tale. A tale in which nothing is as it seems, and in which someone will be Bushwhacked!

. . . [The author] does a fine job with his characters, and he writes some bloody, really brutal fight scenes that are very effective. In addition, for the first time in this series that I recall, Father Tim, the mentor to all the fighters who come out of St. Vincent's, plays an on-screen role in the plot. I really raced through this one and thoroughly enjoyed it. Fight Card continues to be one of the strongest of the original e-book series, and if you haven't given it a try yet, you really should.

Fight Card: A Mouth Full of Blood is the seventh action-packed crime adventure in the Fight Card series by the pseudonymous Jack Tunney (available Monday).

“Jack Tunney” is a pseudonym for several authors who write hard-hitting crime stories inspired by the great sports pulps of the 30s and 40s. They are short, action-filled throwbacks to a time when the pages ran red with great fight action in and out of the ring. Each book is written by a different author, but released under the unifying psuedonym of Jack Tunney.

A Mouth Full Of Blood continues the story of young Jimmy Wyler after his narrow escape from Kansas City at the end of Split Decision (the third of the Fightcard books, also written by Beetner). Relocated back to Chicago where he grew up in an orphanage under the guidance of Father Tim, the boxing priest, he is trying to put his life back together. A young boy he knows, Leo, is having trouble at home and Jimmy wants to help out. The trouble is deeper than Jimmy considered, however, and he must enter the underground world of unsanctioned boxing matches, using the skills in the ring he swore he’d never use again.

The great Fight Card series goes international with King Of The Outback, which is set in Australia. Another difference is that for the first time the narrator isn't a boxer but rather the trainer for a traveling tent show of fighters. Yack, as he's known, is an American who stayed in Australia after recovering there from wounds he received fighting in the South Pacific during World War II. The star of the traveling troupe is an aborigine named Tommy King, the so-called King of the Ring.

Not surprisingly, there's a dangerous rivalry between the show Yack works for and another troupe of boxers that's backed by the local crime syndicate. That rivalry escalates into open warfare. Throw in a boxing kangaroo, a whole tribe of aborigines, arson, a crooked referee, and it all builds to a very satisfying climax that has a nice epic feel to it.

The author behind the Jack Tunney house-name this time around is David James Foster, and while I'm not familiar with his work, he does a fine job of mixing local color, good characters, humor, and plenty of pugilistic action.  Fight Card is one of the most consistently entertaining e-book series out there, and King Of The Outback is a worthy entry indeed.  Recommended.

HARD ROAD, which was written by Kevin Michaels under the Jack Tunney house-name, is the story of Roberto Varga, another two-fisted graduate of St. Vincent's Orphanage in Chicago . . . I'm not familiar with Kevin Michaels or his work, but he does a fine job in HARD ROAD, handling not only the fight scenes with polished ease but also the quieter, more emotional moments as well. He captures the 1957 setting vividly, too, and I really enjoyed his style . . .

. . . If you have been reading the Fight Card series (and I like to think you are), then you will have noticed that the first four books are set in 1954. I haven’t asked why this is, but I do have a theory – not a very good one, but it’s worth a shot. Here it is.

On March 19, 1954, Joey Giardello knocked out Willie Tory at Madison Square Garden, in what was the first televised boxing prize fight to be shown in color.

Boxing had long been popular, but imagine watching boxing on your television screen, in your own home – in colour. It was a whole new world! Boxing came alive.

Atlantic City, 1957

He finds Varga toiling in a Philadelphia gym and offers him the rematch Varga has been waiting years to get. For Varga, it’s a chance to finally even the score, a chance to get the title shot he’s always dreamed about. But Boyle is not the only formidable foe aligned against Varga.

Redemption comes at a bloody price – a price perhaps too high for Varga to pay …

…Of the elements I have enjoyed about the Fightcard series so far, is the diversity of the stories. Each writer has brought something new to the plate. If you’ll forgive the cinematic comparisons – but totally appropriate, because the stories are very cinematic – Felony Fists was like a cross between LA Confidential and Rocky – The Cutman was like a wartime Robert Mitcham film, crossed with the Godfather Part II – and Split Decision was like The Grapes of Wrath crossed with Robert Siodmak’s The Killers.

What does Counterpunch remind me of? The Big Heat. Fritz Lang’s The Big Heat, starring Glenn Ford as a relentless police detective, Dan Bannion, is one of my favourite crime films from the 1950s. Counterpunch shares more than a few similarities. At the start of The Big Heat, Bannion shares a steak and a beer with his wife. In Counterpunch, after winning a fight, Danny would always head back to Packy’s for a steak and a beer. Another similarity, is the almost relentless decency, that both men share, despite being drawn in to a corrupt world. And both men, refuse to back down, fighting for what is right – their way …

Fight Fictioner and Fight Card fan Gonzalo Baeza forwarded me some great covers of Spanish fight pulps from the late ‘30s and early ‘40s, part of the First Novel Series Sports originally published in Argentina. There were 44 different titles, 16 published in Spain, featuring all different sports, including boxing. The tales are written by Joseph Mallorquí Figuerola, better known for his Zorro-like westerns featuring The Coyote.

Danny Dugronski is a fine hero, a strong man who won't let obstacles get in the way of him doing what he thinks is right. There's also plenty of action, as Counterpunch opens and closes with a pair of epic battles in the ring. If you haven't sampled the FIGHT CARD series yet, this one is an excellent place to start, and if you've read and enjoyed the others, don't hesitate to grab this one, too.
